Vanilla Powder
A rich, pure vanilla taste
Vanilla powder is a tasty, versatile treat that cooks can use in a myriad of ways to impart the unique mellow, creamy flavor of vanilla into their dishes. Vanilla powder also offers unique properties that cooks will love. While the heat from many dishes will evaporate the alcohol in regular vanilla extracts, vanilla powder is a great solution. Since vanilla powder has no alcohol to evaporate it retains its flavor much better. It is also better to use in dishes that don't need extra liquids. When cooking with vanilla powder it dissolves easily and imparts a strong flavor.
Vanilla powder is available in two different varieties, so check to see which version you are getting. The first is made by grinding cured and dried vanilla beans into a powder. This pure ground vanilla is a very potent form a vanilla, and it tends to be stronger than standard vanilla extracts. If you are using this type of vanilla powder, you should use about half as much vanilla as your recipe calls for. The second type of vanilla powder comes from sweetened vanilla powder, where fine sugars have been mixed with vanilla extract (Note: this type of vanilla powder is NOT vanilla sugar). This type of vanilla powder should use the same measure of vanilla that recipes call for.
Pure Vanilla Powder (type 1) - Ground Vanilla Bean Powder
This is the stronger vanilla bean powder. This powder should be used at a 1/4th ratio: use 1/4th teaspoon when the recipe calls for 1 teaspoon vanilla. |
Vanilla Powder (type 2) - Vanilla Extract with a Sugar Base
This vanilla powder is the vanilla extract mixed with sugar version. It is good for baking and as a latte or cappuccino topping. Avaiable in 4, 8, 16 or 24 oz sizes. |
Vanilla powder is a much less common form of vanilla, and often can not be found in standard grocery stores.
